Archaeological excavations of Mohenjo Daro began in the 1920s and since then a large part of the city has been discovered. The ruins reveal a planned city built on a raised platform, with a grid arrangement of streets, drainage systems, and impressive brick buildings.


The city was divided into two main areas. West Thela and East Thela.
The citadel on the western mound, which probably consisted of aristocratic and religious structures, and the lower town on the eastern mound, which contained residential areas, granaries, workshops and other public buildings. The houses were built of baked mud bricks, had several stories, and wells for water in the inner courtyard.


One of the most notable structures at Mohenjo-daro is the Great Hamam, a large public bath complex with a central pool, bathing areas, and many rooms. This elaborate structure suggests a focus on hygiene and public health in the Indus Valley Civilization.

Another important architectural feat is the granary, a large structure believed to have served as a grain storage facility, attesting to the civilization's expertise in agriculture and food preservation. .

The people of Mohenjodaro were skilled artisans who produced a variety of sophisticated artifacts, including terracotta vessels, faience beads, bronze and stone tools, and steatite seals. These artifacts feature geometric patterns, animals and even human figures, offering clues about the belief system and artistic expression of the Indus Valley Civilization.


The Indus Valley Civilization, including Mohenjo-daro, began to decline around 1900 BC. The reasons for this decline are not fully understood but may be related to climate change, environmental degradation or social unrest.



Today, Mohenjo Daro faces several threats, including water seepage, improper maintenance, and deteriorating bricks. Conservation efforts are underway to preserve this irreplaceable archeology and ensure its preservation for future generations.
