With 600,000 dead, 950,000 wounded, and 250,000 disabled along with the unbearable betrayal of the Treaty of Versailles the post war Italian government faced serious economic and social problems.
The demobilization of the armed forces left Italy with more than two million unemployed. National inflation was rampant, and the Spanish flu was sweeping the world.
Businesses and institutions associated with the war effort were also damaged and destroyed and the inevitable aftermath of post war unrest and the failure of institutional and political authorities to restore confidence condemned Italy to a bleak future.
Italy's conscripted and inadequate trained army consisted of peasants lacked the basic equipment for warfare and a professional command structure capable of leadership.
The fact that Italy was completely unprepared to take part in this great war signified little or nothing to the callous elite.
