Hiking Skeleton Gorge on Table Mountain, Secret Beach, Safest Route

A hike along the skeleton gorge trail will bring you right to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town. Located just to the right of Nursery Ravine, the hike brings you directly to the Hely-hutchinson Reservoir.

The easiest starting point for the hike to skeleton gorge is in the Kirstenbosch botanical gardens. You will be required to pay the entrance fee to the park.
An alternative is to hike around the botanical gardens. Our starting point is in Newland Forest, from which we hike up to the contour trail that we can follow to skeleton gorge.

At the top of skeleton gorge, you can find the Hely hutchinson reservoir and will have a chance to cool off at the beautiful beach. Returning to the top of skeleton gorge, you will find a map to indicate the path to the cable car.

We didn't find any markings on the trail, yet were find without a trail map. It doesn't hurt to have your general bearings, but we found a single point where the route wasn't obious to begin with.


Shortly before reaching the cable car, we reach Maclear's beacon, a trigonometry point used in experiments to determine earths circumference.

You will find that our route avoids almost all dangerous areas. As long as you take an uber to the start of your hike, you avoid most risks.
