Helidah Ogude-Chambert reads "Knotted Bodies of Water" and "Strange Fish", two of her poems featured in "Japa Fire: An Anthology of Poems on African and African Diasporic Migration (CivicLeicester, 2024).[1] Helidah gave the reading on 10 October 2024 at an online event hosted by ArtReach as part of Journeys Festival International.[2] The event marked the launch of the Africa Migration Report Poetry Anthology Series, a multi-year, multi-volume initiative that is publishing poetry collections on the theme of African migration.

ABOUT THE POET

Helidah Ogude-Chambert is an interdisciplinary scholar-practitioner working at the intersection of migration/mobilities studies, armed conflict prevention, decolonial feminist thought, discourse, visuality, and affect studies, and race-critical theories. Her creative works are concerned with Black life, temporality, bodies of water, state practices of cruelty, everyday atrocities, embodied decoloniality and resistance. She holds a PhD from The New School in New York and is a Departmental Lecturer at Oxford University.

ABOUT THE AFRICA MIGRATION REPORT POETRY ANTHOLOGY SERIES

The Africa Migration Report Poetry Anthology Series was inspired by the "Africa Migration Report: 2nd Edition" published by the African Union and International Organisation for Migration in March 2024.[3]

Our call for submissions[4] is open 365 days a year because every day is Africa Day and because we would like to keep the conversation going for as long as it takes for the African migrant to be treated with dignity and respect on the continent and around the world.
