Goa's Earthen Dam, the Selaulim Dam

Constructed in 1975, in South Goa, India, the Selaulim Dam is one of the most famous dams in Goa, attracting tourists from India and abroad.
It is made of composite earth cum masonry. The dam is an absolute engineering wonder.

It is a water spread area of24 square kilometers. During the mansoon's, the resevoir level of the dam rises higher than it's normal 41.15 meters and starts overflowing through the concrete duckbill spillway .

This duckbill spillway is the unique feature of the ungatted dam. It is designed to pass a maximum flow of 1.450 cubic meter per second.
The water flows at a height of some 50 ft at the initial level and then falls down another 100 feet into the canal.

This water is then conveyed from the main canal to the paddy fields through other minor open canals.

On the other side of the dam is the botanical garden. Designed on the lines of Vrundavan gardens of Mysore, the garden is an ideal place for a day out with family and friends.
