Alcatraz was originally a civil war site. Where the cellhouse now sits was once the site of a brick Citadel.

"When the army constructed the present prison beginning in 1908, the upper stories of the old citadel were demolished to make way for the new building. However, the citadel's bottom floor and adjacent underground water cisterns were left behind to serve the needs of the new prison. Several of the former citadel rooms, located directly beneath the cellblocks, were earmarked for conversion to solitary confinement cells. These cells and the labyrinth of adjacent rooms provided the basis for innumerable tales of "Spanish tunnels" dug into the island's rock."
