This month is DeafBlind awareness month!
We wanted to expand on the role of the SSP
(Support Services Provider)
for the DeafBlind population.
When would someone use SSP services?
To read text documents, such as newspapers, magazines, or letters.
For medical appointments, to describe what is happening in their environment.
SSPs also help with basic banking. They describe what is happening during transactions.
SSPs also guide DeafBlind individuals at social events. They describe the people there and the surroundings.
Grocery shopping as well. SSPs describe foods, item placement, and how the store is arranged.
Why would someone use a Support Service Provider?
Empowerment, access, information, support, and independencee.
What does an SSP NOT do?
Teach, bathe, groom, dress, chauffeur.
What exactly is an SSP?
Support Service Providers are specially trained guides.
They help ensure that DeafBlind individuals are fully aware of their surroundings
to be able to make informed decisions.
SSPs relay environmental information in DeafBlind individuals' preferred language and communication modes.
They provide access to all visual and aural details available,
leaving decisions up to the DeafBlind individuals they work with.
