Just like London, Chennai has a Baker Street too. Of late the signboards say Barrack St, Bakkar St, etc. But the correct name is Baker St. George Baker came to Madras in the 1750s as a sailor and later grew in East India Company service. In the 1770s he organised piped water supply from the Seven Wells area to Fort St George. When a few years later he opted to go back to England, the Company bought this service from him. He therefore became a very rich man. In between he was also Mayor of Madras. It is in his honour we have Baker Street.
