SIERRA LEONE 1950s
Archive footage of Sierra Leone shot by English filmmaker John Robert Slater—known to his friends as Robert—during his time in the British Navy in the late 1950s and early 1960s, while stationed at a military base in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

This is his first reel to be digitized, referenced in our archive as A0385 (60m | 8mm)

This archive footage of Sierra Leone is quite fascinating. In the first part, we see scenes aboard a military ship, which appears to be HMS Newfoundland (59), a British light cruiser.
In the second part, we transition to urban scenes, where we catch sight of city life in Sierra Leone. Notably, we seem to catch William Vacanarat Shadrach Tubma, an important figure in Sierra Leone's history.
