Looking for things to do in New Zealand? Look no further than the Historic Waihohonu Hut Track on the Round the Mountain Trail. This track takes you to the new Waihohonu Hut, one of my favourites in this region and what I like to call the "Backcountry Hotel". The track itself offers spectacular views of Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom) and is a great opportunity for the littlies and less agile alike to experience the best of tramping New Zealand.

The Historic Waihohonu Hut Track trailhead is located on the Desert Road, approximately 31.4km south from Turangi (the access track is on the right just after the intersection with Rangipo Intake Road). From there it's a short 1hr 30min hike to the hut across relatively flat terrain towards the towering peaks of Mts Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu.

Easily accessible via this track both in the summer and winter months, expect the hut to be popular all year round. Bookings are essential during the Great Walks season (book via the DOC link above), and outside of that make sure to take a sleeping mat with you in case all the bunks are full.

The hut is well equipped with a log burner, 28 bunks, tank and stream water (boil or treat water before use) and two clean and tidy long drop toilets. There are plenty of options for excursions from the hut also if you arrive early, such as the short 20-30 minute hike to Ohinepango Springs (seen in this video), 15 minutes to the historic Waihohonu Hut which was the first hut built in Tongariro National Park and the oldest existing mountain hut in New Zealand.

If you're a little more adventurous, head out on the northern accessway to the Tongariro Northern Circuit (towards Oturere Hut) where a short 30 minute stroll uphill brings you to the top of the ridgeline with 360 degree views of Mts Ngauruhoe, Ruapehu and the Kaimanawa mountain ranges.
