Ham radio is an essential gateway for those interested in radio communication, electronics, and antenna experimentation. Beyond being a hobby, it plays a critical role in emergencies, saving lives. Many developed nations, like Japan and the USA, actively promote it, recognizing its contribution to the electronics field. India, with its youthful population, has immense potential to lead in electronics if even 1% of young minds engage in ham radio. Despite misconceptions, qualifying for a ham radio license is easier than many think. There are two grades—General and Restricted. The Restricted Grade allows global communication and is particularly easy to qualify for, especially for Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) graduates and diploma holders, who are exempt from the electronics portion of the exam. With the latest rule changes, only 20 marks (40%) are needed to pass the communication procedure section. I have been training hams for 38+ years, conducting 200+ batches across India.
