The National Council on Public Transportation (NCOPT) is calling on the Transport Department to reverse a decision prohibiting mini buses from passing through the Bois D’ Orange Bypass Road into Corinth. The move is part of a “Traffic Flow Improvement Programme” undertaken by the Department of Transport and Royal Saint Lucia Police Force.
NCOPT president Mr Godfrey Ferdinand has expressed disappointment with the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Transport Division for prohibiting his members from plying their route.
As part of the traffic control pilot project along Castries-Gros Islet Highway, various traffic control interventions are being implemented at key points on the highway.
The entrance to the Windward Island Gases road will be used for one way traffic, preventing vehicles from using the junction as a bypass. This has been selected as the focus of the pilot due to frequent traffic entering and exiting the secondary junctions which are within close proximity to the highway.
Transport Minister Guy Joseph, who was once a mini bus operator and NCOPT President, has reacted to threats from mini bus.
According to reports, the mini bus operators wrote to the Transport Board requesting that they be allowed to travel the route but their request was denied.
The NCOPT president believes the recent action is another example of mini bus drivers being taken for granted.
The initiative by the Transport Department is expected to improve the traffic experience for more than 27,000 average daily commuters.
