Zoom lenses are different. Beloved by some of the greatest filmmakers and frowned upon by others, zoom lenses open creative possibilities and speed up the process. In this episode we show how zoom lenses have been used in cinematography, and why.
We explain optical and mechanical principles of zoom lenses, explore features that are desirable and search for the ideal filmmaking zoom.
We explain and execute a dolly zoom and many other interesting things you can only do with a zoom lens… at lens bending speeds.
We will show you some techniques like extending a camera move or masking zooms.
We also test the affordable DZO Catta ACE Zooms that bring cine zoom features to owner operators.
As a bonus, we are going to use our anamorphic adapters to create anamorphic cine zoom lenses.
