Sunset for 2G and 3G mobile networks

The second and third-generation mobile networks are being phased out. After the first analog generation of mobile network was shut down in most parts of the world. With only one limited 1G service remaining in Russia as of 2021. It's now time for the sunset of the 2G and 3G networks in large parts of the world.

The 2G network was introduced in 1991 and offered a digital multiplexed network, operating on 25Mhz Narrowband.

The main benefits of the second generation of mobile network where:
Data speeds of up to 64 kbps
Enabled services such as SMS and MMS
Provided better quality voice calls

In 2001 Japan started with the first 3G network. This third-generation network uses the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) as the network architecture. It uses elements of the 2G network and combines this with new protocols and technologies. The operation is at 25Mhz using Wide Band Wireless Network to reduce interference.

The main benefits of this third generation of networks where:
Increased speeds up to 2 Mbps
The possibility to send and receive larger data files.
Larger capacities and speeds later in its life cycle

But why are these older networks finally being shut down? The main reason is to make room for new technologies that can use these frequencies in the future. Speeds of the older 2G and 3G networks are becoming too slow and the latencies too high to be practical. Maintaining networks that are not being used anymore can also be very expensive. The sunset for 2G and 3G networks makes room for the 4th and 5th generation of mobile networks to grow.

The 4G network was introduced in 2009. This fourth-generation mobile network has become the standard for mobile networking. It uses an all-internet protocol and does not support circuit-switched telephony like the previous generations did.

Operating at 100Mhz the fourth generation of mobile network has some major benefits:
Speeds of 20 Mbps and higher are possible.
This makes it possible to use interactive multimedia, voice or video over the internet.
The cost per bit is significantly reduced
Ad-Hoc and multi-hop networks are possible, providing a global and highly scalable network solution

The 5G network was introduced in 2018 and Is now starting to roll out worldwide. This fifth generation of networks uses radio bands that are in the 30 to 300 GHz range. This reduces the overall range but provides extremely low latencies and higher speeds. A large amount of smaller network cells, together with signal focusing to achieve speeds up to 10Gbs with extremely low latencies.
