STORYLINE
Myanmar celebrated its 66th Union Day anniversary on Tuesday in the administrative capital Naypyitaw.
The day commemorates the signing of the 1947 Panglong Agreement by leaders of the country's ethnic minorities and the late independence hero General Aung San, who was the father of civil rights activist and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The Union Day was celebrated with a flag raising ceremony early on Tuesday, attended by government officials and representatives of different ethnic groups, followed by President Thein Sein's Union Day message read out by an ethnic Shan Vice President Sai Mauk Hkam.
Myanmar's President stressed the importance of "political stability and the end of armed conflicts" in a speech ready out by Vice President, Sai Mauk Kham, and underscored the importance of greater political, economic and military strength for the country's prosperity.
Tension with ethnic minorities fighting for greater autonomy in Myanmar is considered one of the biggest major long-term challenges for President Thein Sein, who inherited power in 2011 from the army, which ruled for almost half a century.
A cease-fire that held for nearly two decades broke down in June 2011 after the Kachin refused to abandon a strategic base near a hydropower plant that is a joint venture with a Chinese company.
Myanmar's government reached an agreement with ethnic Kachin rebels on 2 February 2013, to work to end a bloody conflict that has cast a shadow over the country's progress in moving away from almost half a century of repressive military rule.
The meeting in the Chines town of Ruili came after the government gained the upper hand by capturing several strategic hilltop positions near the town of Laiza, near the Chinese border, which serves as a headquarters for the rebels.
The Kachin, like Myanmar's other ethnic minorities, have long sought greater autonomy from the central government.
They are the only major ethnic rebel group that has not reached a truce with Thein Sein's administration.
The 1947 Panglong Agreement agreement paved the way for the different groups in this ethnically diverse nation to take independence from Britain together.
The country still lapsed into civil war when Britain ceded power in 1948.
