Researchers at North Carolina State University... have created a new type of eco－friendly nanoparticle... to be used in pesticides.
It′s made with lignin，... an organic polymer found in nearly all plants and trees.
The team discovered that it could replace the silver－based nanoparticles，... currently used in pesticides， which are considered damaging to the environment... as they leave behind a metallic， silver core.

″Our idea， or our approach， was to see if we can， if this is the problem， we replace the metallic core， which doesn′t participate in microbial action， with a biodegradable core.″
Researchers were able to synthesize the lignin nanoparticle... and infuse it with silver ions... to replicate the anti－microbial properties of silver... while also allowing it to be degradable.
The team says their discovery could reduce the many hazardous chemicals used in traditional pesticides and improve crops.
