Amani Sawari is a graduate of the University of Washington with Bachelor’s degrees in Media & Communications and Law, Economics & Public Policy. Her interests lie in the connection between media and law as she explores the consequences that mass media representation has on the socioeconomic status of people of color in the United States, particularly for Black Americans. Sawari is a poet, photographer and reflective research writer. Her Right2Vote Report newsletter is printed and distributed among hundreds of incarcerated individuals across 33 of the United States. This trilogy was compiled during her work in Washington State as a Poetry Mentor to students incarcerated in Seattle’s King County Juvenile Detention Center as a part of the Pongo Poetry Project during the 2016-2017 academic year.
