The Collapse of the Qin Dynasty: The Tragedy of Fusu's Death
Qin Shi Huang unified the six states, establishing the first centralized feudal dynasty in Chinese history. However, this powerful empire collapsed just three years after his death, a swift downfall that leaves much to ponder. Let's explore the reasons behind the Qin Dynasty's demise and consider what different choices Qin Shi Huang and his successors could have made to learn valuable historical lessons.

The Tragedy of the Great Qin: The Death of Fusu
Prince Fusu, Qin Shi Huang’s eldest son, was intelligent and compassionate from a young age. As an adult, he was both strong and benevolent, achieving significant accomplishments in military, political, and cultural fields:

Military Achievements: Defending the North Against the Xiongnu
Guarding the North: Qin Shi Huang sent Fusu to guard the northern border alongside General Meng Tian to repel the Xiongnu invasions, ensuring the safety of the northern frontier of the Qin Empire.
Supporting Meng Tian: During his time in the north, Fusu closely collaborated with Meng Tian, jointly formulating and implementing strategies to defend against the Xiongnu. Meng Tian's victory in the Hetao Plain, which deterred the Xiongnu, was inseparable from Fusu's support and cooperation.
Political Achievements: Straightforward Remonstrance
Opposing Harsh Policies: Fusu frequently remonstrated with Qin Shi Huang, opposing his excessively harsh policies and advocating for benevolent governance. Though his suggestions were not adopted, they reflected his concern for the state and its people and his opposition to the harsh Legalist policies.
Advocating Moderate Reforms: Fusu leaned towards Confucianism’s moderate policies, emphasizing benevolent and virtuous governance. Although his ideas were not fully implemented, they represented his political ideals and governance philosophy.
Cultural Achievements: Representing Confucian Thought
Revering Confucianism: Deeply influenced by Confucian thought, Fusu advocated governing the country with benevolence and opposed violence and harsh governance. His views contrasted sharply with the prevailing Legalist ideology of the Qin state, representing an alternative governance philosophy within the ruling group.
Benevolent and Resolute: Fusu's benevolence and resolve were evident in his governance philosophy and his respectful and caring attitude towards colleagues and subordinates, earning widespread respect and support.
However, due to differences in governance philosophy with Qin Shi Huang, Fusu was sent to the northern border to oversee military operations with Meng Tian. Despite their successful collaboration in securing the northern frontier, Fusu's departure stemmed from misunderstandings with his father, who intended to train and groom him for future leadership.

Meng Tian: The Golden Partner
Meng Tian played a crucial role not only in military achievements but also in border development and infrastructure construction.

Northern Frontier Defense and Development
Building the Great Wall: Meng Tian was tasked with constructing the Great Wall to defend against the Xiongnu. He built a continuous line of fortifications, including walls, beacon towers, and fortresses, establishing effective control over the northern border.
Tuntian Policy: Meng Tian implemented the tuntian policy in the north, encouraging soldiers to cultivate the land during their spare time, boosting agricultural production and economic development in the border areas, and enhancing the self-sufficiency of the frontier troops.

In 210 BC, as Qin Shi Huang fell gravely ill during an inspection tour, he left a will intending to pass military and political power to Meng Tian to assist Fusu. However, this will was intercepted by Zhao Gao, who conspired with Li Si and Hu Hai, concealing Qin Shi Huang’s death and forging a fake edict that forced Fusu to commit suicide. Despite Meng Tian’s pleas to verify the edict and dispute its authenticity, Fusu complied with the order without question, ending his own life.

Meng Tian's Loyal Service
Meng Tian, deeply loyal and understanding of Qin Shi Huang, suggested Fusu delay his suicide to verify the truth. With the support of the military families and his own exceptional capabilities, Meng Tian could have uncovered the conspiracy and eliminated Zhao Gao’s faction. However, bound by loyalty and adherence to Qin Shi Huang’s teachings, Meng Tian chose to accept death rather than betray the empire, demonstrating his loyalty and high standing among soldiers.
