Seal Of Saints is a poem in eulogy of the greatest teacher, Al Shaykh Al Akbar Muhyuddin ibn al ʿArabi (r), briefly surmising his life, rank and teachings.

He was born on The Night of Power (17th or 27th of s.Ramadan 560 A.H) and his life was devoted entirely to the worship and realization of Allah Most High.

This composition is a unique attempt in applying English words to a Nahawand Arabic melody set. From western to eastern tunes, it mirrors the Shaykh Al Akbar’s journey from the Muslim west to his final resting place in its east.


Seal of Saints

A beardless youth when
Secluded withdrew
Sevilla rose high
Great changes anew

Rendered dumb are all
Who try to explain
What happened therein
Of miracle gain

Ibn Rushd silence!
This son of Ta’i
His yes and his no
Wrecks all your theory

The day that he left
Andalus did cry:
‘I will slay them all
Without him I’ll die’

He passed through Egypt
Deathly plague removed
Then came Shadhili
The path thus renewed

Struggles in Qunya
Constriction all night
Gave birth to meanings
A Rumi’s delight

In Makkah opened
Illumination
In Shaam the Bezels
Gift, inspiration

Junayd, Bestami
Ghazali and more
All fade in the shade
Of your knowledge store

Knowingly or not
They here stand in debt
The Jewel of their crown
From your hallowed chest

Fabulous Phoenix
Bright sun of the West
They eat of your crumbs
The best of the rest

Gleam of a thousand
Mansurs in your eye
Why do you never
Cry 'The Truth am I'?

Dry lip you remain
Though quaffing so deep
Of Ahmad’s basin
His favour you reap

Keeper of treasure
Lost those that reject
Prophet’s commander
Serving his behest

My master and guide
Of secrets replete
The seal of sainthood
Disclosure complete

The greatest teacher
A lamp to Jannah
Foot in the footstep
Obeying Sunnah

Brother to Quran
Slave to the Letter
Expounder of Verse
There is no better:

Of the Spirit ye
But little do know
He of this little
Everything does show

About Beginning
A Breath of Mercy
A Hidden Treasure
The Adam story

No one had deduced
What you were given
Unfathomed did you
Our inner heaven

Of The One, Unique
The Single, The True
You tirelessly wrote
Our guidance in view:

Formless, Exalted
Beyond every plain
Yet close than even
Your jugular vein

Glorified That Lord
In hearts does Reside
By day and by night
In you does Confide

Wherever you turn
That Countenance is
Placeless and Matchless
All Splendour is His

True Being is Him
Majestic, Alone
Before or after
Creation was shown

O sinners of Hell
Rejoice in Mercy
Your Lord you now know
Bask in this glory!

I know I’m not
Badr Habashi
Nor have faith like
Sadr Qunawi

But this pilgrim’s end
Is Rukhnadeen
Mudassir pleads
O Muhyudeen!
