"Cater for Safety" presents a 1970's era look into food and kitchen safety basics. Curt British narration accompanies various scenarios of food safety follies. Through the examples viewers learn safe knife techniques as well as how to handle kitchen equipment such as stove top ranges, espresso machines, electric toasters and meat slicers properly.  It opens with a series of commercial restaurant employees greeting the cameraman (:22). A nurse slaps jelly on toast (:49). Upon noticing the electric toaster is jammed; she goes for a metal knife (1:00) to fix the job. Elsie gets a small shock from the still powered toaster blowing the fuse (1:00). The knife handle is noted to be a nonconductive material (1:11) protecting Elsie’s life. A cook cracks eggs into a large sizzling skillet (1:23). She spins off leaving the pan of oil unattended (1:45). The fat overheats (1:58) and inevitably erupts into flame. A dishwasher (2:15) pops a glass in a sudsy dish sink. A red gash cuts across her palm (2:24). Rubber gloves pull bloody glass bits from the sink (2:37); narration explains safe removal of broken glass. A chef knife shimmy’s over raw herbs (2:43). In a hurry, the chef makes a rookie mistake and slices a tomato in the air by hand injuring himself (2:51). A female deli worker operates a large meat slicer (3:09). Close shots show a missing guard (3:16). Warning labels appear on the meat slicer (3:27). Another worker properly disconnects the power (3:32) and sets to clean the machine. Barbara (3:50) spends too much time gabbing and gets her kitchen cloth tangled into the mixer. Barbara is sliced up as she attempts to free the garment (4:04). A prep cook named Jillian (4:17); in a dangerous hurry neglects to pull the bake tray out of the oven in order to flip steaks (4:23). She gets a nasty burn (4:32). On the cafeteria line (4:43) a prep cook is distracted by a coworker (4:45) receiving a burn in the process. A sloppy cafe barista (5:11) burns her hand on hot water. Another chef lazily bounces an oven door open without ensuring enough space for his reach, (5:20) and burns himself. Third degrees burns are zoomed in on (5:36). A woman bussing tables (5:48) slips on a pool of water. How to properly dispose of broken dishes is explained (6:25). The trash remover is pierced with cracked ceramic plate ware (6:44). Human error is discussed (7:03). As the narrator exits, he is saved from two workplace related accidents (7:29). A tossed banana peel (7:31) and attractive woman nearly thwart his escape from work (7:44). The film was produced by Publicity Division Television for the Safety Services Branch Office Telecommunications (8:11).

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
