Apple has confirmed a major shift in its artificial intelligence strategy, announcing a multi-year partnership with Google that will see Google’s Gemini models power the next phase of Siri. The deal marks one of the most important technology alignments between two long-time rivals and signals a clear reset for Apple’s voice assistant, which has struggled to keep pace with rapid advances in generative AI.

Under the agreement, Apple’s next-generation Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini AI and cloud infrastructure. These models will support future Apple Intelligence features, including a more capable and personalised version of Siri that is expected to roll out later this year. While Apple has previously integrated ChatGPT for select Siri queries, the company has now chosen to rely on Gemini as a deeper, more integrated AI backbone rather than a surface-level workaround.

Apple says the decision followed a detailed evaluation of available AI technologies. The company believes Gemini offers the most capable foundation to support its software roadmap without compromising its long-standing focus on privacy. Apple has reiterated that Apple Intelligence will continue to operate primarily on device and through its Private Cloud Compute framework, meaning user data will not be shared directly with Google as part of the deal.
