Today we’re taking you to Northern Patagonia, specifically Argentina’s Lake District! In this video, I’ll be sharing 10 places to visit: 7 towns and 3 national parks, all within easy reach of Bariloche by bus or car. Think boat trips, craft breweries, alpine tea houses, an old steam train, and a sculpture forest. If that sounds like your kind of vibe, you’re going to enjoy Argentina’s Lake District.

10 Places to Visit in Argentina's Lake District
Bariloche
Bariloche is the gateway to northern Patagonia and Argentina's Lake District. A few activities to enjoy include driving the 65-kilometre scenic loop locally known as Circuito Chico. You'll see mountains, lakes, forests and waterfalls. It's a great introduction to the region. For panoramic views, you need to ride the chair lift to the top of Cerro Campanario. And for a taste of Patagonia, be sure to visit the craft breweries, artisanal chocolate shops, and restaurants serving local dishes like trout and boar!
Nahuel Huapi National Park
Nahuel Huapi is the oldest and second-largest national park in the country! And Bariloche is the gateway to the park. The most iconic experience is the boat trip to Isla Victoria, where you get to cruise Lake Nahuel Huapi. Other activities you can enjoy in the park include hiking and horseback riding.
Villa La Angostura
Villa La Angostura is a high-end resort town located on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake. It is known as the ‘Garden of Patagonia’ because of all the rose bushes along the streets, and many of the streets are named after flowers and plants. You can visit the Arrayanes Forest, said to have inspired the movie Bambi, drive the Route of the Seven Lakes and have tea in a giant cuckoo clock at Cucu Shulz.
San Martin de Los Andes
This is another cute lakeside town typical of northern Patagonia. The main thing to do in San Martin de Los Andes is to go on a boat tour of Lake Lácar. Plus, you can enjoy lots of hikes, including one that leads to a mountaintop tea house!
El Bolson
El Bolson is the best place in Patagonia for hiking and epic mountain views. Cerro Piltriquitron is the iconic mountain behind the town that makes it look like a postcard. We’ve been here so many times! One of the main attractions in El Bolsón is the Sculpture Forest, locally known as Bosque Tallado. The sculpture forest is situated on Cerro Piltriquitrón, and the art project came about after a series of fires burned down part of the mountainside. You can also shop at the hippie fair and enjoy a wide variety of hiking trails.
Lago Puelo National Park
Lago Puelo National Park is home to Valdivian forest, mountain peaks, and hiking trails, including one that reaches the Chilean border. You can visit for the day, hike, kayak and enjoy a picnic. I would also recommend doing the boat tour (2 hours and 45 minutes) that takes you all the way to the Chilean border. You get to see emerald waters along the way!
Esquel
Esquel is the best place in Patagonia for train travel and epic day trips. If you visit, you need to ride the Old Patagonian Express. Plus, you can go on a day trip to Piedra Parada and see a towering monolith that rises 210 metres from the Chubut Valley.
Los Alerces National Park
Los Alerces National Park is an underrated park in Patagonia that not too many people talk about! One of my favourite experiences was taking a boat tour where we watched the waters shift from emerald to turquoise, we saw glaciers hanging from the mountain tops, and we came face to face with the second-longest living tree species in the world: the alerce, which earns the park its name!
Cholila
Cholila is known as the former hiding place of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. You can visit their old ranch in a remote corner of Patagonia. And another reason to visit this small town is to attend the Fiesta Nacional del Asado, the biggest outdoor BBQ in the country, and maybe even in the world. Thousands of visitors descend on Cholila, and there’s music, dancing, and lots of meat.
Trevelin
The name Trevelin translates to ‘mill town’ and it was settled by Welsh immigrants to Patagonia. This is the place to learn about Welsh culture at the local museum, have afternoon tea, and visit vineyards. And if you happen to visit in the springtime, you need to make it out to the tulip fields!
