Ground orchid
Here’s a bit about it:
🌸 Flowers: Bright pinkish-purple, sometimes light lavender, growing on tall stalks.
🍃 Leaves: Long, lance-shaped, and pleated (you can see the folds — that's why it's called "plicata").
🌱 Habitat: Loves tropical climates, partial sun to light shade.
🏡 Use: Very popular in tropical gardens because it looks like a fancy orchid but grows like a hardy little shrub.
Mounts Botanical Garden, located in West Palm Beach, Florida, is Palm Beach County's oldest and largest public garden. Spanning 20 acres, it features over 7,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants from six continents, including Florida natives, exotic trees, tropical fruits, herbs, citrus, and palms.
🌿 History and Mission
Established in 1954 and named after Marvin U. “Red” Mounts, Palm Beach County’s first Agricultural Extension Agent, the garden began as a tropical fruit tree arboretum. Over the decades, it evolved into a vibrant botanical garden through public-private partnerships, notably with the University of Florida/IFAS and the nonprofit Friends of the Mounts Botanical Garden.
