It was a war of words in Argentina on Thursday (December 05) as the globe's best Spanish-language rappers descended on Buenos Aires for the Spanish Rap World Championship.

Crowds filled into a stadium to catch freestyle rappers from Spain, Colombia, Panama and Mexico go head to head for a bout of lyrical boxing.

The battle comes as the Spanish rappers compete for lyrical dexterity and technical delivery against each other.

Armed with just a voice and a head full of rhymes, contestants try to outdo their opponent with choice rhymes that touch on issues such as politics and poverty.

"A battle is somewhat different because you can insert themes or whatever you want and you need to verbally attack your opponent and this is the concept of the battle," explained Mexican rapper, Jony B.

The war of words came down to two Latin American lyricists, with Argentina's "Dtoke" edging out Mexico's Jony B to claim the Spanish world title.

Proving there weren't any low-blows in the war of words, the Argentine champion praised his rap rivals.

"(You) reach a moment and the same, I came and I had no confidence, no security, nothing to tell me that I was going to be champion. I had to come and fight, as they say, come to play and the people from other countries have an incredible level. Well, it was my turn (to win)," said "Dtoke".

Rap competitions originated in the U.S. as a way for rappers to make money and get scouted by record companies, with stars such as Eminem and Notorious B.I.G. reportedly getting their big breaks in freestyle battles.
