Haiti, a country that’s been through unimaginable challenges. Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, Haiti has been in a governance vacuum. No elected president, no functioning parliament, and a judiciary that’s barely holding on. Crime syndicates control parts of Port-au-Prince, and violence is a daily. Enter the Transitional Presidential Council, or CPT, formed in April 2024 with seven voting members and two observers, backed by CARICOM and international players like the U.S. of America or Canada. Its mission? Stabilize the country, organize elections by August 2025, and now, promote a new draft Constitution.

Haiti’s CPT is a pragmatic response to a broken system, but it’s messy—unelected, controversial, and struggling to deliver on security or elections. In the U.S., the system is built to avoid that kind of chaos. The Constitution, democratic norms, and institutional depth make a CPT-style council unthinkable, even in a crisis. But this comparison forces the question: how far can a democracy bend before it breaks? And who gets to decide what’s legitimate when the rules fall apart?

Strong institutions and public vigilance are what keep the abusers away.
