Hi! My name is Johanna Kostka and I am a PhD student with Professor Ileana Hanganu-Opatz in the Institute of Developmental Neurophysiology at the University Medical Center Eppendorf, situated in Hamburg, Germany.

Our research group is interested in the mechanisms underlying the development of neuronal networks under physiological and pathophysiological conditions.

In our recent study published in Journal of Physiology we investigated the role of mitral cells in the in the entrainment of oscillatory activity within olfactory bulb – entorhinal cortex networks in neonatal mice.

We combined patch clamp recordings with extracellular recordings of local field potentials and spiking activity in the olfactory bulb and lateral entorhinal cortex of neonatal mice.

Our results indicate that mitral cells show either bursting or irregular firing characteristics.

Bursting mitral cells preferentially fire during discontinues theta burst in neonatal olfactory bulb and entorhinal cortex.

Interestingly bursting mitral cells show a stronger phase locking to theta oscillations compared to non-bursting mitral cells not only in the olfactory bulb but also in the entorhinal cortex.

Our results indicate that bursting mitral cells contribute to the timing of theta events in the entorhinal cortex thereby possibly playing an important role in the entrainment of olfactory bulb – entorhinal cortex networks during neonatal development.
