Zach Marr is back in another installment of his series, "Is It Worth It?" where he takes an honest look at some renowned vintage synthesizers. This week, he's checking out the JX-8P and JX-3P from Roland-- two analog synthesizers from the 1980's, which were created in response to the wildly popular DX-7 from Yamaha. At a time when digital synths were taking over the market, Roland continued creating some amazing analog products that truly stand the test of time; especially as they're used here with the PG-800 and PG-200 controllers. While these instruments might seem like they lack a bit of accessibility, the inclusion of more oscillators and envelopes give them many sonic possibilities in synthesis; and in comparison to the high price tag of Junos and Jupiters, these synths (generally going for prices between $500-$1000) are a strong value for anyone looking to dive into some great vintage instruments.
