My work focuses upon the depiction of people's movement. It explores the relationship between movement and line and how this may influence the audience. This video is an exploratory piece comparing my understanding and another's of my movement notation.
The movement notation utilizes Rudolf Laban's somewhat redundant dance scripture, Labanotation. This notation is used to document someone's head movements which then can be 're-enacted' using the whole body.
The video itself depicts the same woman (Alyssa) dancing twice. The first sequence on the left is that of me instructing Alyssa how to move from my Labanotation. Therefore she had no involvement in the interpretation at this point, I used her so as to visualize my own interpretation. The second sequence on the right is that of Alyssa's interpretation of the Labanotation piece, for prior to explaining how I would like the piece performed I issued her with the Labanotation drawing and asked her to interpret it.
