Korea's architecture industry is taking an interest in green heating and cooling systems. Reporter Olivia Hur talks about heating and cooling systems that use renewable energy sources.

Here we are at an architectural firm in Seoul.

This is an aerial view of a building that uses a new eco-friendly heating and cooling system. In this system, waste heat is stored underground and the concept of Korea's traditional floor heating system is applied to the ceiling.

The heat pump system pulls heat out of the air or ground to heat a home or office building. Because of the eco-friendly technology it has developed, this company was chosen to design the Korea Electric Power Corporation's new headquarters in Naju.

This is called free-cooling. It stores free of charge energy underground during winter and uses them as a source for air conditioning in summer.

Because this system offers a 50 percent energy savings compared with current systems powered by electricity and gas, it is seen as a next-generation system.

The number of patents related to green heating and cooling systems has increased more than eightfold over the past 10 years. The Korean Intellectual Property Office fast-tracks the process of granting patents for these products.

Among all green patents, patents for groundwater and subterranean heating systems accounted for the greatest proportion with 32 percent, followed by solar power with 20 percent and air source power with 17 percent.

As part of efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and recycle waste heat, demand for green heating and cooling systems is soaring.



친환경 에너지 냉난방 시스템

최근 건축업계에 불고 있는 친환경 열풍과 함께, 녹색 냉난방 시스템에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있습니다. 이런 가운데 자연 에너지를 이용한 냉난방 기술을 허영민 기자가 취재했습니다.

[리포트]
이곳은 서울의 한 건축 사무소입니다.

이것은 국내에는 아직 생소한 친환경 냉난방 시스템을 사용한 건물의 조감도로, 폐열을 땅 속에 저장해 두었다가 사용하는 지중축냉 기술과 온돌의 개념을 천장에 적용한 천장복사패널 등이 있습니다.

공기 중이나 지중, 수중의 열에너지를 '히트 펌프 시스템'이라는 열 이동 기계를 이용해 모으고 배분하면 이산화탄소의 발생 없이 냉난방이 가능합니다.

이런 녹색 기술을 소유한 이 업체는 친환경 랜드마크로 나주에 건립될 한국전력 본사 신사옥 설계를 담당하게 됐습니다.

~ 이런 free-cooling이라는, 공짜로 얻어진 에너지를 이용해서 지하에 축적하고요, 그 축적된 에너지를 가지고 여름철에 냉방용으로 끌어와 쓰는 개념입니다.
이러한 기술은 전기나 가스를 이용한 기존의 냉난방 시스템보다 최대 50% 이상 에너지 절감이 가능하기 때문에 차세대 냉난방 시스템으로 각광받고 있습니다.

~ 친환경 급탕․냉난방 시스템에 대한 특허출원 건수는 최근 10년 사이에 약 8배 이상 증가한 것으로 조사 되었습니다. 특허청은 이러한 친환경 관련 특허출원은 다른 출원보다 우선 심사하여 주는 초고속 심사 제도를 마련하여 시행하고 있습니다.

친환경 냉난방 시스템에 관한 분야별 출원 현황은, 지하수와 지열에 의한 것이 32%로 가장 많고, 태양열 20%, 공기열 17% 등이 뒤를 이었습니다.

지구온난화의 주범인 이산화탄소의 배출을 저감하고, 폐에너지도 활용할 수 있는 친환경 냉난방 시스템 개발은 앞으로 더욱 활발해질 것으로 보입니다.
