The accelerating expansion of the universe cannot be explained by our present understanding of the physics of the universe. Large-scale spectroscopic surveys provide unique information to address this fundamental mystery, which is commonly ascribed to some unknown form of dark energy. The distribution of matter in the intergalactic medium is one key prediction of our standard model of cosmology, and is a valuable way to better measure the expansion history of the universe and test theoretical models. I will describe recent results and prospects for new breakthroughs with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), results which are challenging some long-held ideas for the nature of dark energy.
