West Midlands Mayor Andy Street announced the University's invitation for Shankar Mahadevan to receive the highest honor at a ceremony held at BCU on his trade misson to India. Shankar Mahadevan, a globally acclaimed playback singer & member of the renowned Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy songwriting trio, visited RBC earlier this year with other Indian musicians, including Zakir Hussain. They engaged with students, staff, and partners, & discussed potential collaborations between the Shankar Mahadevan Academy in Bangalore and the Conservatoire.

Today Shankar Mahadevan expressed his gratitude for the doctorate, describing it as a special and unexpected moment in his career. He eagerly anticipates the creation of amazing music through collaborations between Indian musicians, whom he represents, and musicians from the West Midlands. During their visit, they witnessed outstanding performances by Conservatoire musicians, which inspired beautiful collaborative possibilities.

Shankar Mahadevan is a versatile artist who has captivated audiences for over three decades with his melodious singing and compositions, encompassing a wide range of genres such as Indipop, film, folk, spiritual, Indian classical, jazz, and world music. He has performed at prestigious music festivals worldwide and had the honor of representing India twice at the United Nations Assembly. In India, he performed for former Presidents Dr APJ Kalam and Pranab Mukherjee.
