A fantastic couple of hours spent at Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof where we see countless services from DB Regio, DB Intercity, RRX, Flixtrain, and a little bit if freight as well.

This was my first time visiting this station and I can honestly say I wasn't prepared for just how big it is. The station concourse running underground is incredibly impressive with shops and restaurants all the way through.

The station was opened 1891 and replaced 3 separate stations located around the city, these were: Bergisch-Märkische station, Cologne-Minden and the Rhenish station.

The original station was designed in a style in keeping with the late 19th and early 20th century as was befitting the city at the time, however change was quick throughout most of Germany and by the time 1930 made an appearance the station was deemed to be unfashionable and also unfit for purpose as traffic was starting to increase. The station was redesigned from 1932 to 1936, this was the brain child of architects Krüger and Edward Behne. The most notable feature was the clock tower.

The next batch of redesign and reconstruction came during the 1980s when the lower section of the station was remodelled following the introduction of the Stadtbahn. The old ticket offices were converted into a food court and lifts were also installed at both ends of the station to allow a greater ease of access for passengers and station staff alike. The former first class waiting room was changed into a hotel.

There was a small amount of work done on 2005 to the lower section of the station where the old toilets from 1985 were removed and replaced by a fast food outlet. A small forest clas lounge was then built at the northern end of the concourse.

This station is a right hive of activity with trains constantly coming and going, the atmosphere is incredible.
