For over 30 years, Denmark’s Thetis-class patrol vessels have been the backbone of the Royal Danish Navy’s Arctic operations. Built in the early 1990s, these ice-breaking frigates—HDMS Thetis, Triton, Vædderen, and Hvidbjørnen—were designed to secure Denmark’s vast maritime territories, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands. But as they approach 35 years of service, can they keep up with modern threats?

✅ 2016-2019 Mid-Life Refit: New radars, Seahawk helicopters, and updated systems
❌ No Heavy Combat Role: Removed Stinger missiles, limited against modern threats
❌ Aging Design: 1980s tech struggles against Russian & Chinese Arctic expansion

🔹 Future Replacement?
Denmark plans new Arctic frigates by the 2030s—but until then, the Thetis-class remains on the frontlines. Are they still fit for NATO missions, fisheries patrols, and Arctic sovereignty? Or is their time running out?
