The Global Indian Diaspora [Lec 07]; UCLA, Lecture of 23 April 2013. Concluding portion of the lecture on 'My Beautiful Launderette' and on Indians in Britain; the idea of 'return'; patriarchy in immigrant families; the dissolution of the family, and the sexual choices available to women -- particularity of these questions in diasporic conditions; some remarks on Sikhs, as well as on people who are stateless (for example, some Indian immigrants to Britain after their expulsion from Uganda and Kenya). Thoughts on 'Patel versus Rasool'.

This lecture begins the next large segment of the course, on the history of Indians in the US. We begin with an overview, and especially with some thoughts on images of India in the US; elements of trade between India and the US; the place of the Transcendentalists, especially Henry David Thoreau; his essay on civil disobedience; what is the India of the American imaginary?
