Restoring a family heirloom - Grandad's Tenon Saw

Описание к видео Restoring a family heirloom - Grandad's Tenon Saw

This restore appeared to be a quick simple job but just removing the handle turned into a drama.
The saw used to belong to a friend's grandfather so there was no room for mistakes and at one point it looked like I was going to damage the screws.
In the end it was all good and the restore was perfect, age patina and character preserved.

Treatments used

Handle
Card Scraper then sand paper to remove the old lacquer.
Cracks filled with Epoxy resin.
10 coats of boiled linseed oil.
5 coats of shellac
2 coats of cabinet makers wax.

Blade
Reverse electrolysis to remove the rust.
wire wheel and 120grit sanding disk to smooth the surface
240grit paper to smooth it further.
phosphoric acid to passivate the steel. (puts a very thin passive film on the surface that blocks corrosion.)
boiled linseed to seal the pores.
then when dry (not tacky) a coat of cabinet makers wax.
Not sharpened as the tool is for display purposes only.

Screws
Rust removed using sandpaper and steel wool on the heads spun in the drill chuck.
phosphoric acid to passivate the steel and remove any remaining rust.
blow torch to heat and then dunk in canola oil to blacken.
oil removed using contact cleaner so that the parts can be glued together, these are press fit parts (no threads)
