Here is the interview with Steven Douglas General Manager at the City of York Treatment Plant explaining the benefits of a Capstone microturbine system at their treatment plant.

"We are at New York City waste for you planning York Pennsylvania our treatment plant has a design flow at 26 million gallons a day we treat waste water from seven including the city of New York and the surrounding in this valleys. Currently my energy bills run about $63,000 a month to me that am unacceptable. What we need to do is reduce that cost we felt that by going with the Capstone micro-turbine we can do that. The microturbines produce 40% more power using the same amount of natural gas as my internal combustion entrance that's incredible."

"We were one of the first treatment plants back 20 years to have a cold gen system installed. We utilize our methane gas that we produce so inside here with our internal combustion engines to produce about 20% of our power needs. The first 5 years there where very little maintenance cost, but as time has going on and technology has is changed and those engines have age they pretty much become a muddy pit for us every 700 hours. We need to do an oil change that involves two mechanics pretty much a whole day. There also involve using a hundred and ten gallons of oil."

"What we really needed was a new technology a more efficient technology in order to generate electricity."

"One of the option was that we would reuse our refurbish the existing reciprocating engines. but when we were looking at that as an option we determine that a (A) wasn't cost effective (B) We were reaching back in technology instead of looking forward to new technology. We wanted to look for an opportunity to invest in future infrastructure development not look to the past. And that's why went with micro-turbines, through the evaluation it was determine that the capital cost the upfront cost where not that much different between the engines vs. the micro-turbines. But when we look at the overall picture the life cycle cost."

"The micro-turbine technology came out better because it has high efficiency."

"We went through a different selection process when we chose Capstone, capstone came to us with a proven reputation. I think that was very important us."

"The Capstone turbine had some advantages over other manufactures turbines one being that there was no liquid lubricate in the system at all. It was all air cool and air lubricated very low maintenance cost. The only thing that we really need to check is a air filter and that’s it."

"This is a unique configuration where you got a C600 and a C1000 align together for an application. We were able to run our electric grid two ways. We can either run it through methane recovery that's the methane that comes off the digestion process or we can run it off of natural gas, why was i important to the authority we needed redundancy. A methane recovery is absolutely paramount to us. We've got a renewable source of energy right here in the digestion process."

"Well it's important because we need the continue warn the digesters and what we do is we out the hot water back into the digesters and that allows more gas to be produce and the turbines to run. The turbines run in a base little electricity 24/7 and i the hot water again as we reused in digesters. The other thing is that people don't think about it for ways to treat the plant is we also have the air to deal with. These micro-turbines admit so much less air pollution than the engines that we currently run to the point where i may not even have to report to the agency the DEP, the amount of pollutant it's going to be negative."
