1961 Gibson EBS 1250 Double Neck Guitar | CME Vintage Demo | Joel Bauman

In 1962, a young man walked into a local music store in rural Kansas to purchase a Hammond organ to play in his rock cover band. He took in some gear in trade, and had some credit left over. The store did not want to give him cash, and insisted that he take more gear instead. He pointed at the wall and said "I'll take that thing I guess." He played the hell out of the Hammond, but never really liked the double neck because of the bright cherry color. A couple years later, he stripped the thing in hopes to paint it a more appealing color, but never did. 49 years later, the owner decided it was time to let it go and gave CME a phone call 773-525-7773.

After we purchased the instrument, we decided that the best way to get it restored to its full glory was to send it to its birthplace and have it worked on by the people who would understand it the best. The folks at Gibson Repair and Restoration did a fantastic job of bringing this back as close as possible to the original specs. It now looks (and smells) just like we imagine it did on the wall in that store in 1962. Included with the guitar is a thumb drive with several dozen pictures showing the restoration process from start to finish.

The instrument sounds and plays absolutely amazing. The guitar side is a joy to play and the PAF pickups in combination with the thick and solid spruce top yield a rich and incomparable tone. The bass also delivers the goods, but once you kick in the inductor, the low end it produces is incredible. We can't stress enough how different this EBS-1250 is from the SG body ones that Gibson started making just one year later. The thicker hollow body and massive solid spruce top really make this a unique instrument tonally.

As if all this was not enough for anyone to want to add this to their collection, this amazing instrument is also extremely rare. The "Gibson Shipment Totals" book states that 0 were shipped in 1961 and only 1 shipped in 1962. According to several resources, 1962 was the transitional year to the solid "SG" style body. Based on these facts, it is very possible that this was either a very special order or a prototype for this model. It also includes its equally rare and original, brown exterior, pink interior hard shell case.

Summary

Cosmetic Condition: The body looks just about new, there's just a couple of very minor, superficial cracks in the binding. The necks and headstocks are mint. This unique double-neck looks incredible!

Playability: The strings are at a medium-low height, play very nicely, and fret clearly.

Modifications: Professionally refinished by Gibson. The solder joints have been redone due to the refinishing job.
