Layman Abstract :
This study compares two methods of extracting essential oils from mint leaves (Mentha piperita): steam distillation and enfleurage. Steam distillation uses heat and steam, while enfleurage uses fat to capture fragrance. Fresh mint was collected in Nigeria and processed using both methods. The steam distillation method produced a higher yield (1.36%) of essential oil compared to enfleurage (0.91%). The key fragrant compound found was levo-menthol, which gives mint its strong smell and is useful for soothing pain, coughs, and sore throats. Overall, steam distillation proved to be the more effective and efficient method for extracting essential oil from mint, making it ideal for larger-scale production like in perfumes or medicinal products.
