1. Sheet Bend (Weaver’s Knot)
Description

The sheet bend is a classic bend knot used to join two ropes together. One rope is formed into a bight, and the second rope passes through the bight, around both parts, and back under itself. It works best when the working end exits on the same side it entered.

Uses

Joining two ropes of different diameters

Joining ropes made of different materials

Temporary rope extensions

Common in:

Sailing and boating

Camping and outdoor work

Utility and general-purpose rope work

Easy and quick to tie

Holds well under steady load

Can loosen with repeated movement or shock loading

2. Double Sheet Bend
Description

The double sheet bend is a more secure version of the sheet bend. The working end wraps twice around the bight before being tucked under itself. This extra turn increases friction and stability.

Joining ropes of very different sizes

Working with slippery synthetic ropes (nylon, polypropylene)

Situations where the load may shift or bounce

Common in:

3. Alpine Butterfly Loop (Butterfly Knot)
Description

The alpine butterfly loop creates a fixed loop in the middle of a rope without needing access to the ends. The knot is symmetrical, compact, and allows the rope to be loaded from multiple directions without slipping.

Creating a mid-line attachment point

Isolating a damaged section of rope

Distributing load evenly in rigging systems
