(17 Nov 2019) Leaders from former communist countries celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution calling for the preservation of freedom and democracy.
Prime Ministers from the informal bloc of former communist countries, known as the Visegrad Four and made up of Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary gave speeches at the National Museum in Prague on Sunday.
They emphasized on the importance of what was achieved during the revolution and on the need to stay united.
The Velvet Revolution began with fiery speeches against the hard-line communist regime at a Charles University campus in Prague on November 17, 1989, prompting thousands of students to march downtown.
The police blocked the street from both sides, squeezing the protesters with armed vehicles before attacking them.
Undeterred, the students went on strike and crowds mushroomed in massive street protests in the days that followed as the regime was collapsing.
On December 29, 1989, Vaclav Havel, a dissident playwright, became Czechoslovakia's first democratically elected president in a half-century.
