Long before the United States was formed, the Spanish Empire controlled vast regions of North America, including Florida, Texas, and California. Spain’s influence helped shape the early foundations of American history, culture, and settlement.

In 1513, explorer Juan Ponce de León claimed Florida for Spain, establishing Europe’s first lasting presence in the region. Spain later founded St. Augustine in 1565, the oldest continuously occupied European city in the United States.

During the 1700s, Spanish missions and presidios in Texas were built to secure territory, counter French expansion, and convert Native populations, giving rise to cities such as San Antonio.

In California, beginning in 1769, Father Junípero Serra led the Spanish mission system from San Diego to San Francisco, permanently influencing settlement patterns, religion, land use, and regional identity.

Although Spain eventually lost control of these territories, its language, laws, architecture, religion, and place names remain deeply embedded in American history today.
