Neurotic disorder phobia a persistent irrational fear of an object or situation although the person may recognise it as unreasonable
Phobia may create panic level anxiety if the situation is not avoided
Commonly use defence mechanism is repression and displacement to avoid anxiety to produced by phobia
Three types of phobia
Agoraphobia
Social phobia
Simple phobia
Ag-fear of open space or fear of living ones home using public transportation

Eg:acrophobia: fear of height
Gamophobia:fear to marriage
Algophobia:fear of pain

Systemic desensitisation
Gradually introducing the individual to fear object or situation in small dose with relaxation techniques
Flooding: implosion repeated exposure to ths disturbing ideas situation or condition untill this longer produce anxiety
Stop negative thoughts by using cognitive behavioral techniques
Administer anti-anxiety and anti depressant drugs
Allow the patient to verbalize feelings about phobia
Patient with history of clostrophobia may need to be sedated during MRI
