Mike Oldfield rings those old tubular bells for the third time.

After mood music meister Mike Oldfield showcased his new album `Tubular Bells 3' in a one-off performance at London's Horse Guards Parade, he divided the critics with some sharpening their pencils and accusing the composer of being pompous and meandering and others really getting into the Ibiza beat. More importantly for Oldfield, steady sales so far suggest that he was entirely justified in going back to the original Tubular Bells for a third reworking. The album, which went on sale at the beginning of September, comes 25 years after the first installment in the series. That has sold almost 20 million units. Version 3 has been brought up to date thanks to the influence of the Balearic Beat dance music style 45-year-old Oldfield soaked up during semi-retirement on Ibiza, the House music centre of Europe. Originally a folk-club singer and rock guitarist, Oldfield created one of the most popular recordings of the 70s with `Tubular Bells', which was one fo the first releases on the Virgin label in 1973.
