Understanding fundamental legal concepts as a small business owner can also be very useful when you’re buying as a consumer.

Under The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, if you are buying as a consumer at a distance (eg online, over the phone or via email) and the trader does not advise you of your cooling off period of 14 days, during which time you can cancel and get a full refund, this period is extended to 12 months.

Even if the trader does have terms that mention the cooling off period and the right to cancel, if those terms aren’t incorporated by the trader, by drawing your attention to the terms at the point of purchase eg by getting you to tick a box, then they haven’t advised you of the right to cancel and the refund period is still extended to 12 months.

The government body that enforces consumer protection rights is Trading Standards and you can find your local Trading Standards office by a Google search.
