In this video, I try to characterize the current political economy of the US has consisting of a triad of concepts: an ideological push towards "hypercapitalism", a reality of crony capitalism, and a corporate oligarchy that has captured government. The ideological commitment to hypercapitalism has been made more acute in the current Omicron surge phase of the COVID-19 pandemic: workers and ordinary people in all aspects of their lives are being pushed to use their own personal resources to "solve" the pandemic. Governments are forefronting the demands of businesses against the demands of public and occupational health.

Crony capitalism and corporate oligarchy are the abiding realities of the US economy, where crony capitalism means that large and mid-sized corporations compete for favors from government, and government leaders tend to comply with those requests. The true "clients" of government are corporations not the voters or the citizens.
