The World Games made its way to the People's Republic of China for the event's 12th iteration, which took place from 7 to 17 August 2025. Being Asia's third staging of the IWGA World Games following Akita 2001 and Kaohsiung 2009, it is set at Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province in the southwest of the country. This edition marked the Games' return to a four-year cycle after the 2021 Games in Birmingham, Alabama were pushed back by one year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the sporting calendar.

Chengdu's hosting of the World Games was announced during an IWGA meeting held in the Gold Coast, Australia in May 2019, winning the hosting rights as its only known bidder.

Chengdu 2025 had attracted around 3,693 athletes from 118 countries, who compete in 256 events in 34 non-Olympic sports, which include debuting sports such as powerboating (MotoSurf) and cheerleading, as well as events for athletes with disabilities such as para freediving and para ju-jitsu. However, bowling, water-skiing, and artistic roller skating were dropped from the World Games, and so does sumo, which was barred from the programme due to issues during competition at the previous Games three years earlier.

Notably, the 2025 World Games saw the introduction of a torch relay, which culminated during the opening ceremony with the igniting of the cauldron (in this case for Chengdu, it is designed as a water-shaped spout rising from the Qinhuang Lake) that would be lit throughout the duration of the event.

Hosts China topped the Games' standings after collecting 64 medals overall - comprised of 36 golds, 17 silvers and 11 bronze. They finished ahead of Germany - at second with 17 golds, Ukraine - which finished at third with 16 golds, and Italy - which placed at fourth after garnering a haul of 57 medals, including 13 golds.
