The Draupadi Cheer Haran, also known as Vastraharan, is one of the most powerful and heartbreaking moments in the epic Mahabharata. This incident takes place during Shakuni’s deceitful game of dice in the Sabha Parva, where greed, ego, and adharma cross all limits.

After losing everything in the game, the Pandavas are forced to stake Draupadi, their wife. She is dragged into the royal court of Hastinapur by Dushasana, where an attempt is made to publicly disrobe her. The entire court watches in silence — kings, warriors, elders, and even her own husbands remain helpless spectators to her humiliation.

Left with no human support, Draupadi surrenders herself completely to Lord Krishna. With folded hands and tears in her eyes, she prays, chanting:
“Hari, Hari, Abhayam Krishna, Abhayam.”

In a divine miracle, Krishna answers her call. As Dushasana pulls her saree again and again, the cloth never ends. The Ekvastra becomes endless, protecting Draupadi’s honor. Exhausted and defeated, Dushasana finally collapses. Witnessing this divine intervention, the blind king Dhritrashtra orders the game to be stopped.

This episode is not just mythology—it is a symbol of injustice faced by women, then and even today. The silence of great elders like Bhishma and Vidura raises deep moral questions. Their inability to act reflects the decline of dharma, often associated with the arrival of Kali Yuga.

Modern interpretations continue to revisit this moment. The novel “Cheerharan” by Neelam Karki Niharika (2016) retells the story from a feminist perspective, focusing on Draupadi’s suffering and strength. The book received the Padmashree Sahitya Puraskar and was shortlisted for the Madan Puraskar, proving how relevant this episode remains even today.
