The exhibition "Speaking for Themselves" takes a look at the contemporary art scene in Iran and consists of a selection of works created by young artists. What is clearly seen in this exhibition is a kind of visual and conceptual difference between the artworks displayed here. Some of these art works reflect social, gender, and political issues. A part of Iran's art scene has been attempting for many years to develop a visual similarity to Western contemporary art production and its strategies. This variety of accesses to art is reflected in the exhibition:
On the one hand, some artists reflect their inner concerns in a variety of media. On the other hand, some artists exclusively reflect on one specific media and its traditions in Iran. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, the exhibition mirrors a duality within contemporary art production: A self-reflective focus on art production in Iran and in Teheran in particular stands opposite an alignment to Western art production and a global art market. In a sense, the exhibition “Speaking for Themselves” maps the socio-political situation in Iran between a continuity of the Islamic revolution and an opening to the West.

All the artists are accompanied by video interviews. These video clips shed light on the respective artistic career, the social position of the artist, the conditions of production and their themes.

Factory TT Berlin/Tehran encourages encounters of international intellectuals, scholars and the public with emerging Iranian artists – to create possibilities to produce new bodies of work and to respond to cultural, economic, and social contexts as an essential foundation for a further development of contemporary art in Iran. Factory TT Berlin/Tehran challenges the Iranian art scenes status quo. It was initiated in 2015 by Shahram Entekhabi and Asieh Salimian.

Zeitgenössische Kunst aus dem Iran

Die Ausstellung "Speaking for Themselves" zeigt die zeitgenössische Kunstszene im Iran und besteht aus einer Auswahl von Arbeiten junger Künstler*innen. Was in dieser Ausstellung deutlich zu sehen ist, ist eine Art visueller und konzeptueller Unterschied zwischen den hier gezeigten Kunstwerken. Einige dieser Kunstwerke spiegeln soziale, geschlechtsspezifische und politische Fragen wider. Ein Teil der iranischen Kunstszene versucht seit vielen Jahren, eine visuelle Ähnlichkeit mit der zeitgenössischen westlichen Kunstproduktion und ihren Strategien zu entwickeln. Diese vielfältigen Zugänge zur Kunst spiegeln sich in der Ausstellung wider:
Einerseits spiegeln einige Künstler ihre inneren Anliegen in verschiedenen Medien wider. Andererseits reflektieren einige Künstler*innen ausschließlich ein bestimmtes Medium und seine Traditionen im Iran. Parallel zum 40-jährigen Jubiläum der Islamischen Revolution spiegelt die Ausstellung eine Dualität in der zeitgenössischen Kunstproduktion wider: Ein selbstreflektierender Fokus auf die Kunstproduktion im Iran und insbesondere in Teheran steht einer Ausrichtung nach einer westlichen Kunstproduktion mit einem globalen Kunstmarkt gegenüber. In gewisser Weise bildet die Ausstellung „Speaking for Themselves“ die sozio-politische Situation im Iran zwischen einer Kontinuität der Islamischen Revolution und einer Öffnung nach Westen ab.
