Elegant and regal, the Hawaiian hawk, or ʻio, is an endemic native species that lives and breeds exclusively on Hawaiʻi Island. ʻIo are agile and expert hunters and considered ʻaumakua by many Native Hawaiian families. Increasingly, ʻio are being shot from the sky by people who view them as a threat to their chickens and other small livestock.
