In 1862 a crew of Confederates woke up to find their ship missing. You see, just a few hours earlier the crew of the CSS Planter went ashore in Charleston Harbor. But they made a grave mistake. They had left the enslaved crewmembers unattended. And unfortunately for the Confederates, one of the slaves onboard was an expert pilot. So around 3 am, the enslaved crew fired up the ship’s boilers and simply sailed away. The expert pilot was the slave Robert Smalls. Although he wasn’t formally trained, after years of work Smalls gained extensive knowledge of the waterways in the South. So Smalls was able to pilot the ship to save their families. But before they could sail away to freedom, the enslaved crew had to sail past Fort Sumter; one small mistake and they would be fired upon. Fortunately, Smalls knew all the naval customs, so he put on the captain’s uniform and hat and was able to give the proper signals to the Confederates, eventually allowing them to sail away and successfully reach the Union blockade, where Smalls and the other slaves would finally be free after turning over the ship to the U.S. Navy.
